Why homeowners like Secured by Design

Everglade-is-Secured-by-DesignFor social refurbishment and new build housing, Secured by Design (SBD) has in most cases become a requirement to qualify for tendering. But does SBD mean anything to homeowners?

Secured by Design is promoted by local police through roadshow events, neighbourhood watch schemes and printed guides on securing your home. So people see the logo in the context of advice on preventing burglary.

The Secured by Design logo is also displayed on a wide range of security products and people are used to seeing it at their local DIY store on products such as locks, burglar alarms & security lighting. This level of recognition adds credibility when you are talking about the high security benefits of your windows and doors.

Security is always high on the agenda of homeowners when considering new windows. Research has shown that 48 percent of homeowners who had windows installed said additional security was a key factor in their decision.

It’s likely that those concerned about security will be swayed by SBD accreditation when choosing windows. The statistics make a good case for this. Burglary rates are much lower on SBD houses. Zero burglaries per 1,000 for SBD versus 14.1 burglaries per 1,000 for non SBD houses. SBD housing developments suffer at least 50 percent less burglary, 25 percent less vehicle crime and 25 percent less criminal damage.
